Welcome to Better Streets for Tower Hamlets. We are a campaign which aims to introduce “Liveable Neighbourhoods” in Tower Hamlets.
Liveable Neighbourhoods are a series of schemes that are expected to be announced by Transport for London as part of its Healthy Streets programme. Funding is likely to be made available to boroughs to spend on various projects aimed at making neighbourhoods less dominated by motor traffic, which would improve the well-being of local residents and the experience of people walking and cycling. Improvements could include:
- removing through motor traffic from residential streets, thus reducing the noise, pollution and traffic danger which through-traffic poses to local residents (whilst nonetheless retaining convenient vehicle access for local residents)
- using redundant roadspace to create new “pocket parks”, which will be oases of greenery and public space
- making Tower Hamlets’s shopping streets more attractive and accessible for visitors who are on foot and bicycle
- creating new, high-quality walking and cycling routes across our Borough
If you are interested in being at all involved in the campaign, or would like more information, please do get in touch — we’d love to hear from you!
